Craig Mogeul

Guide & Operations Manager 

Born and raised in Falls Creek, Craig Moegel brings a lifetime of mountain experience to Backcountry Tours. From his early days racing with the local club at age 7, to competing internationally in moguls and freeride events, Craig’s skiing roots run deep. He began instructing at just 15 and went on to build a global career across Australia, Canada, Switzerland, France, Italy, and Japan.

Craig spent over a decade coaching freestyle and freeride in Europe, and has worked extensively as a ski tech and boot fitter in renowned resorts including Whistler and Nendaz. Back home, he served 20 years on the Falls Creek Pro Ski Patrol, including 5 years as Patrol Supervisor, and has led countless critical operations through 25 years with Falls Creek Search and Rescue—4 of those as Unit Controller.

Craig holds Avalanche Certification Level 1 & 2, is a Cert IV Trainer and Assessor, and delivers advanced emergency first aid training for ski patrol and remote responders. He’s also a snowmobile operations expert, guiding and training with Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, SES, and AGL. Whether he's guiding in Hakuba or operating snowcats for Snowy Hydro, Craig’s knowledge and leadership make him an exceptional guide and mentor in the backcountry.

Now in his fourth season leading Backcountry Tours, Craig continues to set the standard for safety, skill, and mountain wisdom.

Layla Lee

Guide & Owner 


Layla grew up in Falls Creek following in her father, Steve Lee’s, footsteps of ski racing and big mountain skiing, she has been immersed in mountain life from the start. After ten years of ski racing, she shifted her focus to freeride skiing and quickly found herself falling in love with everything the backcountry has to offer.

By her teens, she was already working alongside Steve on the backcountry tours, learning the ropes and developing a deep understanding of guiding operations. After finishing her racing years she spent a decade in Hakuba, Japan, working as a tail guide and honing her skills in some of the world’s most dynamic terrain.

Layla brings a calm, confident presence to her guiding, shaped by years of experience, a deep respect for the mountains, and a genuine love for sharing them with others. She loves nothing more than sharing her backyard with guests and giving them a day they’ll never forget!
